This is the perfect adventure for those who want to go further afield in Indonesia, but still need the convenience of departure and arrival in Bali. This is not a trip for those who want to experience places were other “tourists” mingle. Rather it’s a exploration of the islands of West Nusa Tenggara. We seek the unexplored wonders of Lombok, Western Sumbawa and islands in between. Discover hidden waterfalls, marine lakes, incredible snorkelling, and – weather permitting – swim with the whale sharks! Suitable for all ages, this is truly a unique holiday.
Meet our representative at the office of Gili Getaway fast boats in Serangan, Bali. They will escort you while you travel by fast boat to Gili Gede, Lombok. From there you transfer to the Aliikai. After lunch, and a safety briefing, we are off for our first snorkel at Gili Gelong. The waters here are calm, and protected, and you will have a chance to acquaint yourself with your snorkel equipment. When you are confident in the water we will move to Gili Ringit and Gili Layar where you can experience the excitement of a “drift” snorkel over large coral reefs, home to a number of turtles. As the sun sets, we move closer to Lombok, and it’s all ashore to our fave local bar, where we watch the sun set behind Mt Agung in Bali.
After breakfast, it’s off to the market! Travelling “local” style in the back of a truck, you will experience the joys (!) of the local markets. Suci (our chef) will explain the differences between the spices, and local foods. It’s hot! So on the way back to the boat we stop at beautiful Gili Asahan for a swim at a white sand beach. Cool down with a delicious juice, walk up the hill to the local yoga shala, or gently drift over a small coral garden just close to the resort. Late morning, we move to my place for a picnic lunch! White sand beach, SUP and kayak, or just relax in the hammocks. A late afternoon “muck” snorkel and then we head on out for our overnight trip to Sumbawa.
Awaken in the quiet waters of a protected strait in Western Sumbawa. This morning we have our own private, deserted island to explore. Pulau Bedil is a tiny atoll surrounded by hard coral reefs. The water is crystal clear, and there is very little current. After a long drift snorkel down the strait, you are free to snorkel where you choose. We’ll bring the eskie, and the beach chairs, and you’ll have all morning to relax. At lunch, we board and travel 3 hours east to Pulau Moyo. A late evening drift on the south west side is an opportunity to spy stingrays, moray eels, and more on coral tufted rocks, surrounded by sand. This snorkel is a case of, the slower you go, the more you will see. It’s wonderfully alive with creatures appearing for their evening meal. Another hour further east, and we anchor off the village of Labuan Haji.
For those who are interested in sharks, we will do an early morning snorkel on Angel Reef. This was a magnificent coral reef, teeming with fish, but it did not survived the global coral die off two years ago. It is still a sight to see, far out to see, and we do normally see a couple of black tipped reef sharks there on the southern side. The north side sandy face is home to thousand of Garden eels, it’s very rare to find colonies of these eels in these waters.
After breakfast, it’s Easy Rider time. You will meet your motor bike rider, and travel by bike to the Princess Dianna falls. Yes, she was actually here. Just prior to her divorce, she fled to Indonesia to reflect on the end of her marriage. She spent time on Moyo, at these exact waterfalls. The falls themselves are beautiful with turquoise opaque water falling into a number of pools below the falls. After we travel to a more “adventurous” waterfall, where you can swing out from the top of the falls, from a rope, and drop into the deep, still pool below. A short ride back to the village, and lunch on board.
The afternoon is at your leisure. Many guests choose to stay on board with a book, while others go ashore for beach time. There are a number of fresh water springs on the island, and at low tide, you can see fresh water seeping out of the sand on the beach. Often the buffalo and monkeys come down to drink there. Overnight in Moyo and take this option to sleep on deck, falling asleep while counting the shooting stars. Magical!
An early start will take us to North Moyo. Here there is another waterfall to explore (if you want!) or some really interesting hard coral reef gardens, in crystal clear waters. Time spent here will depend on the tide, as we need a high tide to access the beach easily. After, we travel two hours to Satonda. Satonda island is a collapsed volcano (caldera) that was filled by a tsunami when Mt Tambora erupted just over 200 years ago. The Tambora eruption was ten times larger than the better known Krakatoa eruption a couple of years later. The ash that filled the sky after, traveled around the world, and was responsible for the “year without sun” in Europe. Thousands of people died in Europe from famine due to crop failure that was directly linked to Tambora. The marine lake that resulted from the tsunami is unique, as there is no “flow” to the sea, and any fish that had washed in, have now died off. It’s home to a rare form of algae, and one species of tiny fish. The beach is protected and there is good snorkelling off the beach.
After lunch we travel all afternoon to reach a small fishing village where (hopefully) tomorrow we will swim with whale sharks.
Today is all about whale sharks. Weather permitting, we will be allowed to snorkel with these magnificent animals. We can watch from floating fishing platforms while they feed underneath. They are enormous! We will also visit the village, inhabited by the Bugis people, who were the original “pirates” in Indonesia. There will also be a couple of opportunities to snorkel various islands as we head west for our overnight trip back over the top of Lombok.
Back in civilisation! We’re spending the day in the “famous” Gili islands of Trawangan, Meno and Air. It’s a full day to explore all three Gilis – depending on the wind and the tides, there will be 2 or 3 snorkels before lunch at various sites. After lunch, you are free to explore on foot, bike, or horse and cart – your choice of islands. Grab a massage, a coffee, or have a shop. Late afternoon, we will do a long drift snorkel and get up close and personal with turtles who are having their evening feed on the Trawangan reef. Depending on conditions, we will anchor overnight either at Gili Meno, or back in Mentigi Bay.
Before dawn, the boat will head south. After breakfast we will snorkel and swim at Gili Nanggu. An amazing artificial reef has been constructed, and there are thousands of fish. In the next bay is a beautiful coral reef garden. After, you have time to explore Gili Kedis and Gili Sudak. After lunch, we travel back to Gili Gede, where you will board the fast boat and travel back to Bali.
